2004/05 World & Australian Championships

Hosted by Black Rock Yacht Club, Melbourne, Australia
Last update - 24 May 2004

The Sail Melbourne International Regatta is acclaimed as one of the Worlds top five “off the beach” sailing events.

In 2005 Sail Melbourne will be conducting in conjunction with the International Moth Class Association of Victoria and the International Moth Class Association of Australia, the International Moth 2005 Australian and World championship and a pre-worlds regatta. Click here to download PDF flyer.

Black Rock Yacht Club is situated on Half Moon Bay on the East coast of Port Philip Bay, about 30 minutes from the heart of Melbourne City. It is a very strong dinghy club with excellent facilities including a huge bar, balcony, big change rooms, many showers, hard rigging surface, 3 launching ramps, beach access, pier and breakwater. They have outstanding race management with three International Race officers and a huge depth of skills in running World, Olympic and National sailing regattas. Sea breezes of around 15-18 knots with 0.5-1m waves are very common in summer, while the rest of the time is either a moderate on-shore breeze or a hot and gusty north westerly wind with flat water.

Victorian Tourist Information

Melbourne is a city famous for its sense of style. Glamorous events are a trademark of the city, as are its cafes, wineries and shops. Melbourne boasts a lifestyle experience. There are beautiful buildings, fantastic shopping precincts and countless shows, exhibitions and galleries to entertain. It is also very easy to get around with the constant stream of trams.

Money from the goldrush of the late 19th century built much of the city. Today, the magnificent architecture of this era still stands. Just outside the city limits lies a world of natural beauty. The Twelve Apostles are accessible for a day trip although it is recommended you take your time travelling down the Great Ocean Road. Wilson's Promontory, a playground of wild animals, beaches, and forests, is only 3-hours' drive away. Just around the corner on Philip Island is the famous penguin parade. Each night, hundreds of penguins shuffle ashore with plenty of room for spectators to enjoy.

Only 50kms or 1-hour's drive out of Melbourne is the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, a region of hills, forests, and most importantly, wine. There are over 200 vineyards in Victoria with each producing magnificent wines. Further north is the high country where you can ski — and walk, kayak, canoe, abseil, fly and cycle. It is in these hills that Banjo Paterson wrote the poem, The Man from Snowy River. (Banjo also wrote the world-famous song, Waltzing Matilda.)

Wherever you turn in Victoria, you will be surprised with the diversity. It is a distinctive part of Australia with many unique experiences to be found.

Melbourne's Weather

Melbourne is situated at the top of Port Phillip Bay, with 2,000sq kilometers of deep open water unaffected by tide or geographical features, regular sea breezes averaging 15 knots, water temperature of 20°C and daily air temperature between 25°C and 30°C. However it can get up to 40°C quite easily during summer with a very dry and hot northerly wind. Still bring warm sailing and casual clothes though, as it can get cool at night and during the day when the cooler SW'ly breeze has been blowing for 2-3 days from the Antartic. Melbourne is reknowned as being one of the best places to sail in Australia!
